Melanokortin receptor 5 je protein koji je kod ljudi kodiran MC5R genom.[1][2] On je lociran na hromozomu 18 u ljudskom genomu.[2] Kad se melanokortin 5 receptor onestposobljen kod transgenetskih miševa, indukuju se poremećaji rada njihovih eksokrinih žlezda, što rezultuje u umanjenoj produkciji lojnih žlezdi.[3]
