Bernard "Bernie" Sanders (8. septembar 1941 -) je američki ljevičarski političar koji kao mlađi federalni senator zastupa državu Vermont, gdje je kao nezavisni kandidat izabran 2006. godine. Sanders, koji sebe opisuje kao demokratskog socijalista,[1][2] i promiče uvođenje evropskog modela socijaldemokracije u SAD, se smatra prvim socijalistom u historiji američkog Senata. [3]
Već prije nego što je postao senatorom, Sanders je izazvao senzaciju tako što je godine 1990. kao nezavisni kandidat izabran u Predstavnički dom SAD kao zastupnik Vermonta, postavši tako prvi nezavisni kongresnik od 1950. godine. Sanders je na tom mjestu ostao punih 16 godina. Prije toga je Sanders služio kao gradonačelnik grada Burlington od 1981. do 1989.
Iako je tokom karijere žestoko kritizirao Demokratsku stranku, odnose s njome je poboljšao kada je 2000-ih njome počela dominirati ljevica. Kada je 2007. godine stupio u Senat, priključio se senatskom klubu demokrata, slično kao i njegov kolega Joe Lieberman, koji je iste godine izabran kao nezavisni kandidat.
