Deutsch: Das Wappen entstammt einem Siegel um 1400. Das Kreuz steht für Kurtrier, da die Stadt den Erzbischöfen gehörte und bis 1794 als Oberamtssitz diente. Die gekreuzten Schlüssel (Schlüssel Petri) beziehen sich auf das Patronizium der zwei ältesten Kirchen auf dem St. Petersberg und in der Altstadt.
English: The composition of the arms appears already on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from around 1400. The cross is the cross of the State of Trier, the crossed keys are the symbol of St. Peter, the patron saint of Trier and symbolise the two odest churches on the St. Petersberg and in the historic city. In the late 15th century the composition was placed on a shield and the arms have not changed since.
