Knez nem. fürst je naziv za plemićku titulu koja potječe od latinskog izraza princeps a po rangu se nalazi neposredno ispod kralja. Knez može biti iznad ranga vojvode, ali i u nekim državama njegov sinonim. Kneževi upravljaju teritorijom koja se naziva kneževina, a koja može biti i suverena država. Izraz knez je u slavenske jezike ušao kao posuđenica od starogermanske riječi kuning koja je označavala kralja.
U mnogim jezicima riječ princ i knez su sinonimi.
