Opis

Banner of the Holy League used in the Battle of Lepanto (1571). Scan of a printed reproduction of a watercolour painting by Rafael Monleón (1888) of a replica, 54 x 38 cm [1]. Under the (life-sized) depiction of the crucified Christ is the Ghislieri coat of arms of Pius V, flanked by those of Charles V (for Spain) on the left, the Republic of Venice on the right and of John of Austria (below), linked by chains.

The Museo de Santa Cruz in Toledo keeps a different standard of the Holy League, formerly kept in the Cathedral of Toledo. Inv. No. DO1577. It is possible that Monleón's drawing, or the "replica" it was drawn from, was in fact only based on a verbal description of the standard in Toledo and does not accurately depict the historical artefact (?)
