Robert Mapplethorpe (4. novembar 1946 – 9. mart 1989) je bio američki fotograf, poznat po masivnim i visokostiliziranim crno-bijelim portretima, slikama cvijeća i muškim aktovima. Bio je blizak prijatelj Patti Smith i s njom imao vezu, prije nego što je shvatio da je gej. Umro je od AIDS-a. Homoerotizam i BDSM motivi u njegovim radovima su bili razlogom zašto je njegovo djelo postalo predmetom kontroverze, odnosno povodom da se traži ukidanje javnog financiranja njegove umjetnosti.
