James Fenimore Cooper (15.9. 1789 – 14.9. 1851.) bio je plodni i popularni američki pisac ranog 19. vijeka. Posebno je poznat po romanima pomorske i historijske tematike, potonje sakupljene u ciklus Leatherstocking Tales, čiji je glavni junak Natty Bumppo. Među njegovim najpoznatijim djelima se nalazi romantični roman The Last of the Mohicans (Posljednji Mohikanac), koga mnogi drže remek-djelom.
